Denatured hemp oils – What’s next?

Posted on

The impending introduction of mandatory denaturation for hemp oils poses major problems for the cannabis industry. In the last post we described the problem in more detail and also mentioned some suggested solutions.
Now it is also clear how Herba di Berna will continue with CBD hemp oils.

CBD oils as cosmetics instead of chemicals

First things first: no, we will not sell denatured hemp oils. In the future, the oils will be able to be sold as cosmetic products. However, we would much rather have a sensibly regulated CBD market.

What will change for customers?

Something will change for our customers in that we will no longer be able to offer our strongest hemp oils (30%, 35% and 40% CBD content) after September 2022. To produce an oil with such a high CBD content, the extraction process exceeds the THC limit for cosmetics. Even if this concerns only the raw extract and not the finished product, such production would be against the law.
Solutions to this problem already exist, but implementing them will take even more time than the six months our producer had between the announcement of the denaturing requirement in April and its implementation in October.

The advantage More sustainable oils

However, we do not only have bad news, but something is changing for the better: In cooperation with“Swissextract“, an organic certified company, we will produce our oils up to 24% CBD content only with organically grown sunflower oil as a carrier. As a result, we are no longer dependent on imported coconut oil and can thus produce our oils exclusively from ingredients grown and processed locally in Switzerland.

We are glad that we have found such a good solution to be able to offer high quality organic hemp oils also in the future.

CBG: The “Mother of Cannabinoids

Posted on

While most people have at least heard of CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBG is a largely unknown active ingredient in the hemp plant. However, in a growing cannabis market and advancing research on the hemp plant and its active ingredients, CBG has recently come under increased scrutiny.

What is CBG?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a cannabinoid that was discovered in 1964 by two Israeli chemists. Like CBD, cannabigerol has no psychoactive effect, so it does not make you high.

The CBG content of conventional hemp plants is quite low, as the widespread cultivars focus on CBD or THC.
Although young plants have a fairly high level of CBGA, the acid version of CBG, at a certain stage, this acid is converted into other cannabinoid acids such as THCA or CBDA as they continue to grow, which in turn are processed into THC and CBD. Because CBGA occupies this role of the “original” cannabinoid in plant growth, the molecule is sometimes referred to as the “mother of cannabinoids.”
The actual conversion into other cannabinoids depends not only on the genetics of the plant, but also to a large extent on external circumstances. The temperature, UV light and oxygen content are decisive in determining which chemical processes are triggered.

In addition to the interest in the chemical processes, the focus in research has recently shifted increasingly to the active ingredient cannabigerol. In medical and therapeutic use, it has many similarities with CBD, although CBG is even said to have a better effect in some cases.

Is CBG the better CBD?

Based on individual studies and experience reports, the attitude is now partly spread that CBG is actually the better CBD. Thus, there are increasingly not only CBD oils, but also CBG oils to buy. However, knowledge is still far too uncertain to make such a sweeping statement. As with all cannabinoids, research is still in its infancy – which makes a lot of things difficult, but also always brings great surprises.

If the desired effect is achieved with CBD products, it is currently hardly worth spending more money on comparable CBG products. But cannabigerol is definitely interesting, and why not give it a try? In our store there is currently with the variety“Afghan Kush” a plant that contains both almost 5% CBG and 10-15% CBD. Further, we plan to add new cannabis resin products focused on CBG to our product line in the first months of 2023.

Addendum of November 14, 2022: We have two brand new CBG/CBD oils on offer!

A relaxed Valentine’s Day

Posted on

Soon it will be Valentine’s Day again. An exciting day that can be both stressful and beautiful. In either case, relaxation is the name of the game, whether it’s getting through the day unscathed or making sure it’s memorable. Many studies suggest – and many people say it from their own experience – that CBD has a calming and stress-reducing effect.

To enjoy a relaxing Valentine’s Day there are many different ways to ingest CBD products. Besides the famous joint, there are, for example: vaporizing CBD or taking CBD oils (although these are then not emptied in one day 😉). In addition, there are also particularly relaxing care products: In our assortment we offer various CBD bath balls and a homemade CBD ointment. A bath for two, followed by a romantic massage – that would be something for an unforgettable evening?

Do you still need a gift for your loved one? Also there worth a look in our store: In addition to the mentioned care products, we offer various treats with hemp. To enjoy these things, the recipient does not have to be a pissed-off hemp fan – everyone can enjoy a delicious chocolate for dessert. Until the end of February 2022 there is a Valentine’s Day discount in our store: With the discount code “LOVE” you benefit from 25% off (almost) the entire range. (EU goods are excluded from the promotion).

We hope that our tips and our products will contribute to a relaxing and memorable Valentine’s Day. We wish you success and an enjoyable February 14.

Where our products are refined

The cooperation between us and the workshops of VEBO in Grenchen and the Oberwald Center from Solothurn means a lot to us. We are happy to stand by this successful cooperation and would like to show what it looks like in this blog post. At the Oberwald center, our products are refined and the packaging is labeled, while VEBO’s workshop takes care of filling, sticking and welding all our blossoms.

The two institutions VEBO and Zentrum Oberwald offer people with a physical or mental impairment a protected working environment. Our orders involve the finishing and packaging of products, which are then put on the market for commercial sale. For people from the workshops, who often find themselves in a difficult life situation, this enables them to participate in an important sector of our social life.
When we have our products prepared for sale by these workshops, we are entering into a business relationship that is about more than just profitability. With every order we can make a small contribution so that the people in the workshops can engage in meaningful and varied activities. Knowing this, it is not a problem for us that not every single product is perfectly packaged or glued, even if this means that we sometimes have to do some touching up ourselves. In our eyes, such organizations are very worthy of support, and especially in a time of chasing crises, we are very happy to continue this partnership.

For you, our customers, this means: If the label on your next purchase is not quite straight on the packaging, this is no reason to get upset. It is much more a sign of the humanity with which our products are provided.

Optimal storage of cannabis

Posted on

Cannabis can be stored at home for up to 9 months without any problems if stored properly. However, in order to avoid quality loss, a few things should be taken into account. If the flowers are not stored well, the active ingredients can evaporate and in the end only a dry dust is left, or it begins to mold. Basically, three aspects must be considered when storing cannabis: Temperature, air and light.

Large temperature differences should be avoided, as trichomes (resin glands) could break off, reducing the odor. Therefore, storage in the refrigerator or even in the freezer is not recommended – even though most instructions mainly refer to the heat sensitivity of cannabis. The optimum temperature for storing grass is 18-21 degrees Celsius.

Various things depend on the air – or rather the airtight seal. If the flowers are not moist, they also do not begin to mold. Furthermore, the active ingredients and the terpenes (responsible for the smell and aroma) can volatilize if stored in poorly sealed containers.

Light-protected storage is necessary, as the cannabinoids are also damaged by UV radiation. This has a negative impact on the effectiveness of cannabis. In addition, the flowers turn brownish in the light.

In order to provide you with the optimal storage, we offer two new products in our range of storage containers. The amber glass container is the perfect container for home. It can be used for years to protect the cannabis from harmful influences. The glass used protects the flowers from UV radiation and provides an airtight seal. Stylish, sustainable and quality preserving.
An aluminum container is a good choice for on the go. This is lightweight, does not break even in everyday use and provides comprehensive protection for the cannabis. Due to its durability, this container also represents the most sustainable choice possible.
