Heavier meals, less exercise, holidays, and a different daily routine can cause us to suddenly become more aware of our digestion. At the same time, there is growing interest in the role that <strong>cannabis and the gastrointestinal tract<\/strong> \u2014or, more specifically, cannabinoids\u2014play in the digestive system.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This topic is indeed scientifically fascinating. This is because our gastrointestinal tract contains numerous components of the body\u2019s endocannabinoid system. However, this does not automatically mean that CBD or cannabis treats digestive problems. There are important differences between biological mechanisms, preliminary research findings, and proven medical applications.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cannabis and the Gastrointestinal Tract: The Endocannabinoid System in the Digestive Tract<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short, consists, among other things, of the body\u2019s own cannabinoids such as anandamide and 2-AG, various enzymes, and receptors. The cannabinoid receptors <strong>CB1 and CB2<\/strong> are particularly well known. This system is found not only in the brain, but also in the digestive tract and other tissues.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent review articles show that the ECS is involved in various processes in the gastrointestinal tract. These include, among others, intestinal motility, metabolism, appetite, immune processes, and the function of the intestinal barrier. This makes the endocannabinoid system an interesting area of research for gastroenterology and nutritional science.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;d like to start by understanding the basics, our guide provides more information on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.herbadiberna.ch\/en\/blog\/endocannabinoid-system-structure-function-and-role\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">the endocannabinoid system: its structure, function, and role<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What role do CB1 and CB2 play in the gut?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simplified statement that CB1 is found only in the brain and CB2 exclusively in the gut is incorrect. Both types of receptors are present in various parts of the body and perform different functions. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CB1 receptors play a role in the intestinal nervous system, among other things, and are involved, for example, in the regulation of intestinal motility and various metabolic processes. CB2 receptors are found particularly frequently on immune cells and are therefore the subject of intensive research in connection with immune responses and inflammatory processes. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is precisely why the <strong>CB2 receptor<\/strong> is of interest to gastrointestinal researchers. We explain in more detail the functions this receptor type performs within the entire endocannabinoid system in our article <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.herbadiberna.ch\/en\/blog\/cb2-receptors-and-their-role-in-the-endocannabinoid-system\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">\u201cCB2 Receptors and Their Role in the Endocannabinoid System<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can cannabinoids affect digestion?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the research gets complex. Cannabinoids cannot be reduced to a single effect. Depending on the cannabinoid, receptor, tissue, and physiological state, different effects may occur.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, research is being conducted on how cannabinoid signals influence <strong>intestinal motility<\/strong>\u2014that is, the movement of the digestive tract. At the same time, researchers are investigating the role the ECS plays in intestinal barrier permeability and in communication between the nervous system, immune cells, and the gut. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is interesting to note that, depending on the biological context, cannabinoids can both inhibit and influence bowel movements. Therefore, the simple statement \u201cCannabis stimulates digestion\u201d would be too general from a scientific standpoint. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cannabis and Gut Flora: What Do We Know About the Microbiome?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gut microbiome has also attracted a great deal of scientific attention in recent years. The term \u201cmicrobiome\u201d refers to the community of various microorganisms that colonize our digestive tract and live there in a complex interplay with the human body. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, researchers are increasingly investigating the connections between <strong>the microbiome and the endocannabinoid system<\/strong>. Of particular interest is the question of whether changes in the gut microbiota can influence signals from the ECS and whether this interaction, in turn, alters metabolism, the intestinal barrier, or immune processes. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, we must be particularly careful to draw a distinction here: The fact that a biological connection exists does not necessarily mean that an over-the-counter CBD product specifically improves gut flora. Many interesting findings to date have come from laboratory, animal, or early mechanistic studies. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is precisely where our original article from 2024 was too definitive. The source material at the time linked cannabis and the gut microbiome to therapeutic effects in some cases much more directly. Today, we would interpret the research in a more nuanced way.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do studies show about inflammatory bowel disease?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cannabinoids are being studied particularly intensively in connection with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn\u2019s disease and ulcerative colitis. While the results are certainly interesting, the body of research is not conclusive enough to support a general treatment recommendation. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A scientific review published in 2024 evaluated 40 studies, including randomized trials, cohort studies, and meta-analyses. The review found that some patients used cannabis to manage their symptoms. However, the authors emphasize that objective clinical benefits still need to be investigated more closely.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another meta-analysis of controlled trials found evidence of an improvement in perceived quality of life and, in some cases, in clinical disease activity.  <strong>In contrast, no corresponding clear effect was observed with regard to objective markers of inflammation and endoscopically measurable inflammation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s an important distinction. People may feel better subjectively without that automatically treating the underlying inflammation. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does this mean for CBD and gastrointestinal symptoms?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CBD is one of the most extensively studied cannabinoids in the hemp plant. Nevertheless, it would be incorrect to directly apply studies on medical cannabis or specific cannabinoid-based medications to commercially available CBD products. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studies differ, for example, in terms of cannabinoid composition, dosage, dosage form, and the condition being studied. Furthermore, CBD does not simply interact directly with CB1 or CB2 like a classic switch. Its pharmacological mechanisms involve numerous other target structures.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, <strong>no blanket statement such as \u201cCBD is good for digestion\u201d<\/strong> can be <strong>drawn<\/strong> from the interesting role of the ECS in the gut. Rather, research shows that the endocannabinoid system is a significant component of gastrointestinal physiology and continues to be the subject of intensive study. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can CBD itself affect the gastrointestinal tract?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A comprehensive assessment must also take potential side effects into account. CBD is often well tolerated in clinical studies; however, adverse effects have been observed, particularly at higher doses studied in medical trials. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A systematic review of randomized trials found, among other things, an association with <strong>diarrhea and a decreased appetite<\/strong>. In addition, interactions with certain medications may be relevant when CBD is used for medical purposes. However, the data from clinical trials cannot be readily applied to every over-the-counter CBD product.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why the same principle applies here: more isn\u2019t automatically better. If you have an existing medical condition, are taking medication, or have persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, you should seek a medical evaluation from a healthcare professional. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Product form does not necessarily correspond to medical use<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another point was not given enough consideration in the original article.  <strong>In Switzerland, CBD products may fall under different product categories and, as a result, be subject to different legal requirements.<\/strong>  A product must therefore not be limited to a specific method of consumption or health-related use solely on the basis of its name.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swissmedic, the FOPH, and the FSVO expressly point out that the legal classification depends on the specific intended use. On the contrary. Today, we know more about CB1, CB2, intestinal motility, barrier function, and the connection between the immune and nervous systems. At the same time, studies continue to investigate whether certain cannabinoid mechanisms can be utilized for medical purposes in the future.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our original source from *Hanf Magazin* therefore remains an interesting starting point for this topic. However, based on the current state of research, we would phrase some of the conclusions drawn at that time more cautiously. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: Cannabinoids and digestion remain an exciting field of research<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cannabis and the gastrointestinal tract<\/strong> are more closely linked scientifically than one might think at first glance. The endocannabinoid system is active in the digestive tract and influences, among other things, bowel movements, immune processes, metabolism, and other physiological processes. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, interesting biological mechanisms should not be confused with a proven treatment.
