The discussion surrounding the use of CBD for migraines, as well as medical cannabis for migraines, has long since moved beyond anecdotal evidence and has become part of everyday clinical practice. For many sufferers, living with episodic, throbbing headaches is like a constant battle, one in which conventional therapies often reach their limits. Swiss specialists, including experts from the Hirslanden Headache Center, increasingly view the hemp plant as a serious option in cannabis-based migraine therapy. Current study data and clinical experience now clearly demonstrate the role that THC and CBD play in acute attacks as well as in prevention.

The Endocannabinoid System: A Target for Headaches and Migraines

To understand why the cannabis plant is the subject of such intensive research in the field of neurology, it is worth taking a look at human anatomy. Scientific publications, such as those by the Swiss publisher Rosenfluh Publikationen AG, emphasize the central role of the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). Among other things, this complex network regulates pain processing and the transmission of stimuli in the brain.

Scientific theories suggest that people who suffer from chronic migraines or severe headaches often have a clinical endocannabinoid deficiency or a dysregulation in this very system. The plant-based active compounds (phytocannabinoids)—primarily THC and cannabidiol (CBD)—can bind to the receptors of this system like keys. Studies are investigating how this interaction modulates pain signals and alleviates typical accompanying symptoms such as nausea or extreme sensitivity to light.

Research & Experience: Does Cannabis Help with Migraines?

In response to the question , “Does cannabis help with migraines?” international research in recent years has provided increasingly clear answers. Even though many studies initially began with smaller groups, the scientific evidence gathered on the use of cannabis for migraines paints a clear picture:

Decrease in Monthly Attacks (Colorado, 2016): In a study of 121 participants, 85% reported a positive effect. On average, the number of migraine episodes per month decreased from 10.4 to 4.6 days.

Halving the Number of Painful Days (U.S., 2019 & Israel, 2020): In a U.S. study involving 316 participants, 88% reported a noticeable improvement, with an average reduction in migraine days of 42.1%. An Israeli study from 2020 involving 145 patients confirmed this trend: 61% were able to reduce their monthly attacks by at least half.

Fewer Conventional Pain Relievers (2023): Recent surveys from 2023 also show that not only did the frequency of pain decrease, but so did its perceived intensity, and patients had to rely on conventional pain medications less often over the course of the study.

Reducing the Duration of Acute Attacks: Which Is More Effective—THC or CBD?

Particularly revealing is the direct comparison between the psychoactive THC and the non-psychoactive CBD. A widely cited, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study demonstrates that targeted inhalation using a vaporizer (vaporization) enables significantly faster absorption than oral ingestion and can measurably shorten acute episodes is demonstrated by a widely cited, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study (published, among other places, on the Thieme academic portal):

The combination studied: An inhalable combination of 6% THC and 11% CBD proved to be particularly effective in the clinical trial.

Rapid response: Just two hours after inhalation, this combination was significantly more effective than the inactive placebo in relieving acute headaches.

Sustained effect: The improvement observed in the study remained stable for 24 to 48 hours.

The study data highlight an important distinction: While THC-dominant or combination formulations were more effective for severe attacks that had already begun, the synergy between the two cannabinoids offers the greatest potential.

Prevention and Everyday Life: The Role of Over-the-Counter CBD

Both the Hirslanden Headache Center and specialized neurological reports emphasize that medical cannabis therapy for migraines is primarily considered by doctors when standard medications are ineffective or cause severe side effects.

While acute medical pain management in Switzerland requires prescription-only medications and medical supervision, studies on CBD for migraines are focusing primarily on prevention and maintaining a balanced daily routine. Since internal stress, restless sleep, and tension in the neck and shoulder area are among the most common triggers in everyday life, many people use over-the-counter hemp products as part of their daily relaxation routine.

Conclusion: Medical Treatment and a Conscious Balance in Daily Life

The scientific evidence clearly shows that medical cannabis is a highly promising area of clinical research into migraines and headaches; however, when it comes to treating these conditions, it should always be administered by healthcare professionals.

On the other hand, those who want to promote a sense of calm early on in their daily lives and counteract stress-related tension will find that legal Swiss hemp products offer natural support for their personal well-being—whether through high-quality full-spectrum drops for their daily evening routine, soothing balms to massage into the neck area for relaxation, or gentle devices for smoke-free enjoyment.

Häufig gestellte Fragen (FAQ) zu CBD bei Migräne und medizinischer Forschung

Inwiefern verkürzt medizinisches Cannabis mit CBD bei Migräne akute Schmerzattacken?

Recent placebo-controlled studies show that, in particular, the inhalation of a combination of THC and CBD can significantly shorten the duration of acute migraine attacks.
