On Thursday, April 20, 2023, two Swiss hemp companies will give away 11,000 legal CBD cannabis cuttings to passersby in the main train stations of Bern and Zurich. The Swiss hemp industry is in serious trouble, according to their World Hemp Day message.
Anyone walking through the main train station in Zurich and Bern on Thursday will encounter thousands of small hemp plants. In droves, they are proudly carried by commuters through the main station and out into the city. They are legal CBD cannabis cuttings distributed for free by two Swiss hemp companies, Herba di Berna and Stecklingsfarm.ch.
Hemp industry in the midst of major challenges
With the campaign, the two companies are drawing attention to two things, according to the companies’ business managers. Philippe Wietlisbach, CEO of Herba di Berna: “The Swiss hemp industry is facing serious challenges. If politicians don’t set the right course soon, a market worth billions will suffocate.” Latest example: Due to unclear legal situation, the online giant Galaxus took all CBD hemp oils out of its assortment despite high demand.
Other challenges cited include increased energy costs, impact on wage structures and competitiveness, and the upcoming European THC legalization.
At the same time, the campaign aims to draw attention to the many uses of the hemp plant. Jonas Jermann from Stecklingsfarm.ch: “We want to give the hemp plant back the social value it actually deserves”.
